WitrynaAlthough intraperitoneal fat is not always present around the liver, the right inferior edge of the liver (hepatic angle) is often visible on abdominal radiographs because it indents the extraperitoneal fat in the parietal peritoneum (Fig. 11-5; see Fig. 11-1 ). 18 This fat consists of posterior pararenal fat laterally and perirenal fat medially. The retroperitoneal space (retroperitoneum) is the anatomical space (sometimes a potential space) behind (retro) the peritoneum. It has no specific delineating anatomical structures. Organs are retroperitoneal if they have peritoneum on their anterior side only. Structures that are not suspended by mesentery in the abdominal cavity and that lie between the parietal peritoneum and abdominal wall are classified as retroperitoneal.
